IVY THREE

“Yogi

The Ivy Three were a trio of students from the ivy-covered Adelphi College, in Garden City, New York.

Hula hoops were hot.  Goldfish gulping and Volkswagen jamming were hip.  When not engaging  in

such extracurricular activities or cramming for tests, Artie (Berkowitz) Kaye, Charlie (Koppelman)

Cane and Don Rubin would lift a glass or two and harmonize.  Friends encouraged them and one

warm day the threesome walked into Shell Records at 1697 Broadway, in Manhattan.

@

Shell Records was rooted in a dentists bankroll and the street smarts of a song writing team. Lou

Stillman and/or Sid Jacobson (formerly an editor for Harvey comics) had created the “Treasure  of

Love” (Clyde McPhatter), “Round and Round” (Perry Como), “Don’t Pity Me” (Dion & the Belmonts).

The day the ivy leaguers walked in, Lou and Sid were working on a novelty number based on Yogi Bear,

then a character on the highly successful “Huckleberry Hound Show.”   Koppelman kicked in his two-

cents and the tune was done.  “It was so bad, so bad,” Stillman said in an interview with Paul Heller.

“It was so bad that it was good enough to become a top 10 smash.”

@”

Hush Little Baby” was the follow-up.   It was serious and it flopped.  A few more silly singles were

issued.  “Nine Out of Ten” and “Bagoo.”  But, it was too little, too late.  Artie went off into the exciting

world of insurance sales.  Charlie and Don formed Koppelman-Rubin Productions and worked their

wonders with the Critters, Tim Hardin and Gary Lewis.  Lou and his musical interests lingered on for

years.  In 1972, Lou Stillman and his co-producer Bobby Succer became “One Hit Wonders” in their

own right when recording an assemblage of sessioneers as THINK and scored with “Once You

Understand” (#23 January 15, 1972).
