The “new” Jive five to be comprised of Clarence Palmer (b. January 2, 1919/Pawtucket, Rhode Island),

Earl Johnson (b. November 30, 1932/New York City), and the Tinny brothers, Allen (b. May 28,

1929/Ansonia, Connecticut) and William “Pee Wee” (b. September 25, 1930/Greenwich Village), were

formed in 1956.  Three quarters the members had an extensive musical histories dating back into the

30s.

Clarence and his brothers Dick and Earnest had performed nationwide. club after club, for 23 years as

the Palmer Brothers.  As such they had sang (and sometimes recorded in a back-drop role) with Count

Basie, Earl “Fatha” Hines, Duke Ellington, and had even recorded (appearing on the 1942 remake of

“Minnie The Moocher,” “I Want To Rock”…) as the Cabaliers with Cab Calloway.  During the 30s and the
