The
Hullaballoos
The Hullaballoos
were a part of the original British
invasion of 1964; no debate. They were from Hull.
England (ergo their name). They formed in ’63 as
Ricky Knight and the Crusaders (quite an underw-
helming name) signed to Columbia Records, Britain.
Things appeared bright as their long, long bright
blond hair; so they were a visual act. There was
Godfrey Mortimer, Harry Dunn, Ricky Knight, Andy Woonton. No one saying lead; it was all harmony.
Apparently not a single one of these guys went on to do notable after death befell the Hull-boys.
They created four singles, in the US. Their cover of Buddy Holly’s, “I’m Gonna Love You Too” made the
Billboard
top 50; followed by Holly-like “Did You Care” squeak into the Hot 100. Their two albums currently
available on CD; and you may want to
give a listen
; “I Won’t Turn Away Now.” They had an anachronistic
sound; maybe a full contrivance by schmaltz producers, Hugo & Luigi, but 50+ years later there’s something
sweet’n’upbeat about listening to an effort to Beatle the Beatles.
Zip is known about the four originals, though bloggers claim Mick Wayne and John Cambridge both later of
Junior’s Eyes—one-off backup band for David Bowie– briefly were Hullaballoos.
Did these flashers get there just due? Was it all contrived or trite?
Yes, it was a natural, they did make more than one appearance on 60s rock show Hullabaloo (notice one less letter L)…
