It should’ve happened… multiple hits, a massive career, world recognition and all the rest.
Joey Paige
Discarded, forgotten…
Joey Paige
has been selling real estate––hopefully
quite successfully––25+ years. There was a time
a half-century ago when it look like this young
man was going to make a big, big-time music
career. As a bass player he accompanied Dickie
Do and the Don’ts (remember “Nee Nan ), Freddy
Cannon, and toured with the intact Everly Brothers.
When TV 60s sensation
Shindig
happened Joey was enlisted as something of a regular. Two singles were
rapidly issued on Tollie Records (legendary label with a 14 month existence), both produced by Sonny
Bono; one co-written by Phil Spector (“Dream For Sale”), the other by Rolling Stone man Bill Wyman
(“’Cause I’m in love with you,”
Give a listen
). Befriended Stone Brian Jones played on one 45s. The Stones
while in LA got to crash in his apartment; to compensate Joey got to be the open act for the Stones on one
of their early US tours.
In a 2013 interview, Joey noted he hadn’t figured on the impending crash; the shut down of
Shindig
. Next
a single for Vee Jee produced by Marshall Lieb (formerly a member of Specters’ Teddy Bears), a double-
sided oldie––“Goodnight My Love” b/w “Roll over Beethoven.” A final Phillips disk, a remake of Shep &
the Limelites’ “Daddys Home”…like all of the former 45 failed click.
Before the walk away Joey Paige, as bass man, toured with Phil Everly recording a demo (available You
Tube), the co-written “You Broke It.”
