It should’ve happened… multiple hits, a massive career, world recognition and all the rest.

Signe Toly Anderson.  –

(Jefferson Airplane Takes Off)

What ever became of…

Crawdaddy magazine in January 1967 called

the album Jefferson Airplane Takes Off as

“the most important Album of American rock”

of 1966.   The face of the group was Signe Toly

Anderson. She refused to sign a contract with

the group’s manager and was gone before the album was off the presses. Also gone within moments Iwas

the groups initial drummer Skip Spence (both that’s a whole other story).

What became of Signe? And why did she feel this great need to walk away from what would become one of

the greatest rock bands of the era?

The mystery of it… she died January 28 2016. By all noted accounts she never recorded again, despite

having very appealing, expressive, and unique voice. Give a listen: “Chauffeurs Blues.”

Even without the appearance of Grace Slick, Jefferson Airplane was going to take off. It’s forever unknown

what recordings she could’ve made as a Jeffersonian; just how far she could’ve taken her talent…on record

that is. For for nine years she did appear with the 10-piece Oregon-based Carl Smith and the Natural Gas

Company. No known recordings were issued.
