Robert was born Stanley Applebaum on November 26, 1 933, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and raised in
Edmonton, Canada. He sang in church choirs and with local orchestras before winning a scholarship to the
opera school of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. There he studied acting and singing, making
many theater and TV appearances. In 1954, he came to New York City to try his luck at Broadway, but
nothing panned out, so for four months he sold stationery in Gimbel’s department store. Returning to
Canada, he won a leading role in the CBCs production of Little Women. Numerous other theatrical
productions followed.
.
Stanley’s transformation into “Robert Goulet” occurred when he was cast as Sir. Lancelot–opposite
Richard Burton and Julie Andrews–in the Broadway production of Camelot. Columbia Records offered the
saccharine singer a contract, and for years Goulet’s easy-listening LPs graced Billboard’s top pop albums
chart.
