Jack Sigler, Jr., was born in Tampa, Florida, in 1950. In high school, while playing in the school band,
Jack decided to stuff the Sousa and form a rock’n’roll unit with some fellow school band members. In
almost zip time, the group, Mercy, was gigging at local dances. In 1968, Jack went off to the University
of Southern Florida.
.
Mercy’s line-up shifted a bit at this point, but soon settled down to include Sigler (guitar), Ronnie Caudell
(guitar), Rodger Fuentes (drums), Buddy Goode ( bass), Debbie Lewis (organ), Jamie Marvell (guitar),
and Brenda McNish (piano).
.
George Roberts, a Hollywood producer, came to Tampa with Lou Chaney, Jr., to film Fireball Jungle.
Jack’s father was good friends with the movie mogul, and recommended that Roberts catch his son’s act.
The producer liked one Mercy number called “Love (Can Make You Happy),” so the tune was recorded
and included in Fireball Jungle—only the film was never released.
.
Not overly discouraged, Mercy managed to place their gooey Steve Alaimo-Brad Shapiro production with
Sundi, a small independent label. After months of airplay and some chart action in the Miami
area,Warner Bros. stepped in and acquired the disk for national distribution.
