Deodato was born Eumire Deodato Almeida on June 21, 1942, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Deo is a self-

taught musician who can work his way with the keyboard, bass, or guitar. He made his professional

debut in Brazil accompanying Astrud Gilberto and won honors for a composition, “Spirit of Summer,” at

a Rio song festival.

.

In 1967, Deo started making connections with musicians and producers in the U.S.   By 1970, he was

involved in studio work with Roberta Flack, Bette Midler, Wes Montgomery, and Frank Sinatra.   Three

years later, Deo was in the spotlight with his truncated though funky instrumental rendition of Richard

Strauss’ imperial work, “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” a.k.a. the theme from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A

Space Odyssey. The track won a Grammy for “Best Pop Instrumental Per formance.”   His scoring

abilities were thereafter made use of for TV programs, specials, and movies.

.

Deodato has recorded numerous albums for CTI, MCA, and Warner Bros., and produced Kool & The

Gang from 1979 to 1982 and in ’89 DEXY MIDNIGHT RUNNER frontman Kevin Rowland’s debut solo

album.
