Sailcat was never a group per se. They were more of a happening that, well, happened to find one good soft
shoe song. Their lone self-titled album indicates that “officially” Sailcat comprised two guitar pickers named
Court Pickett and John Wyker. They had been hanging around the Muscle Shoals, Alabama, recording
scene, and had picked up some influential friends, like Clayton lvey (bass), Chuck Leavell of the Allman
Brothers (keyboards), and Pete Carr (guitar)–a producer, song writer, and later one-half of LEBLANC &
CARR. All of these sessioneers and two others played on the tracks. And all of the aforementioned (with the
exception of Leavell) contributed to writing Sailcat’s tunes.
.
“Motorcycle Mama” was a fluke hit from Sailcat’s debut LP. When a follow-up was needed, all returned to
the Widget Studios to cut something called “Baby Ruth.” Sales were slow, ot much worse. Their swan song,
“She Showed Me,” came next. In light of the disk’s poor showing, the “Sailcat” name was shelved, and the
loosely knit aggregation directed their energies elsewhere.
In 1973, Court Pickett had a solo album issued by
Elektra.
