Randy was born Randall Van Wormer on March 30, 1955, in Indian Hills, Colorado–a town with a gas

station, a post office, a trading post, and 2,000 souls.   Randy’s folks were Fundamentalists and

disallowed many activities, including listening to rock and pop music.   When Randy was 12, his dad died

in a car crash; his mother moved the family to a fishing village near Cornwall, in England.

While attending St. Austell College, Randy took to playing the guitar and began making demo tapes.

Familial restrictions apparently were lifted, because Vanwarmer soon began singing songs in secular

clubs and night spots.

In 1979, Randy moved to Woodstock, New York, and signed with the town’s label, Bearsville.   “Just When

I Needed You Most,” a Vanwarmer composition, was delicate, easily digestible, and a huge hit.

After “Whatever You Decide” (#80, 1970) and “Suzi” (#55, 1981), and an album–“Warmer” (#81, 1979)–

Vanwarmer’s career cooled.   A few passed over LPs were released in the early ’80s.   Few critics noted the

appearance, late in 1988, of Randy’s warm release on 16th Avenue Records, I Am.   The disk featured two

tracks that placed on the country charts–“I Will Hold You” (#53, 1988) and “Where the Rocky Mountains

Touch the Sun” (#72, 1988).   The Vital Sparks (1994) seems to have only been issued in Canada.
