Byron (b. Gary Mack, 1948, Alberta, Canada) was the news director of CKLW radio in Detroit when his

brief rub with national notice paid off.   MacGregor had heard a winning editorial broadcast on Canadian

radio by GORDON SINCLAIR about those mighty but maligned minions to the south, “The Americans,”

and decided to read the opinion piece himself over the air.   Listener response was overwhelming–the

station was swamped with calls.   Not much coaxing was needed to get the newsman into the recording

studios of Armen Boladian’s Detroit-based Westbound Records.   The disk became an instant but one-off

smash.

Byron MacGregor died on January 3, 1995 at age 46.
