A performer of stage, screen, and vinyl, Paul Nicholas (b. Paul Beuselinck, Dec. 3, 1945, Peterborough,
England) launched his show biz career at the age of 16– pounding piano as “Paul Dean” with wild man
Screaming Lord Sutch & The Savages. Three years later Paul was making recording efforts as “Oscar.” In
1967, he landed a role in the London cast of Hair, which he followed with the title role in Jesus Christ
Superstar (1972) and a brief stay in the cast of Grease.
.
Nineteen seventy-five was a big year: Nicholas appeared with ANN-MARGRET in Tommy, with ROGER
DALTREY in Lisztomania, and with EDD BYRNE, DAVID ESSEX, and ADAM FAITH in Stardust. RSO
Records offered to record some sides; the resulting “Reggae Like It Used to Be,” “Dancing With the
Captain,” and “Grandma’s Party” were smash singles in England. Only “Heaven on the Seventh Floor;,”
however, found its way onto the stateside radio waves. A few more 45s were issued, but nothing further
garnered any airplay.
.
Before Paul Nicholas’ disappearance–in the United States–from the world of high visibility, he starred in
Nutcracker (1982), The World Is Full of Married Men (1979), and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club
Band (1978).
