“Nuttin’ for Christmas” was absolutely the hottest Christmas tune of the year. Who can ever forget those

endearing lines: “I’m gettin’ nuttin’ for Christmas/ Mommy and Daddy are mad.” Every label in the land

was out to find a kid to sing those words. Columbia had RICKY ZAHND. MGM had BARRY GoRDON. Next

to jump on the bandwagon was the Cincinnati-based King company. Syd Nathan had found a lad of a few

years named Joe Ward. Joe’s not singing anymore, or so it seems. His artsy rendering sold some copies and

earned a place on Billboard’s Top 40–but when the Christmas tree came down, Joe was out of a job and

back in school.
